Global Paths Cross in LA

As we create the next MBA class with our admits this time of year, another great international mix is forming. Our mission in Admissions is to create a kind of miniature United Nations here, where our MBA students learn about global culture from each other while gaining management understanding together too. Los Angeles is a gateway to the world which opens both ways, so this is the perfect place to mix the best of America with the best from 40+ countries around the world.

International students (and their families) find that they fit well in our multi-lingual city with every cuisine available. A taste of home may be comforting, but our students also share a sense of adventure, which is why they come to this forward-thinking region in the first place. Pioneers have always found their way to California, and we rely on newcomers to keep bringing fresh ideas and global perspectives which make this place dynamic for everyone.

Many Anderson graduates stay on the West Coast after their MBA since we offer such interesting careers and a balanced lifestyle. Those from abroad often arrange to stay for at least a few years under special work permit programs that help them establish their post-MBA careers while adding to the US economy.

UCLA Anderson's status as a STEM program helps students to get visas, just as all students benefit from the credibility that a UCLA degree brings anywhere in the world. Southern California may be the base of our alumni network, but thanks to our international commitment we keep growing connections to successful people worldwide.

Speaking for myself, I'm glad to have seen the world several times over as I traveled to recruit applicants for our MBA program. Asia, Latin America, Europe, the Middle East -- I've been everywhere to meet prospective students and learn about many cultures first-hand. Nowadays I stay at headquarters upholding that global mindset, while my team of admissions officers takes their turn to travel and share UCLA Anderson's appeal.

We all understand the value that international students bring to our school and our country. Add in the vital Americans and we feel lucky to be part of a worldwide network of fascinating, friendly people that we in MBA Admissions keep adding to every year.

About Aaron: Aaron Meltzer (’23) is a second year at UCLA Anderson. Prior to Anderson, he was a consultant at Slalom Consulting in Los Angeles. He came to Anderson to pivot into product management and get his toes wet in entrepreneurship. In his spare time, you can find Aaron playing tennis, bouldering/rock climbing, watching anime, or biking around LA.

This summer I am interning as a product manager in Tokyo, Japan, at Rakuten. Many people know Rakuten from their sponsorship on either the FC Barcelona or Golden State Warriors jerseys, but in Japan, they are well known as a tech giant. I learned about this position while browsing MyCareer (Anderson’s job listings) one day and stumbled upon this role in Japan. I knew I wanted to try product management and I had fallen in love with Japan four years earlier on a work trip, so I figured why not apply. I ended up getting the position and was told there was a 70% chance I would be able to do the internship in Tokyo due to uncertainty around securing my work visa. I decided to take the gamble. After ten weeks of filling out forms and a lot of waiting, I got my official 3-month visa as an “engineering specialist” four days before my internship was due to start. 

Fast forward four days and I’m now living in Tokyo near Tokyo Tower, a big tourist attraction. Rakuten set me up with an apartment (thank goodness), where the kitchen is a hallway, there’s a tv in the bathtub, and the toilet has a seat warmer and cleaning feature. I was so excited to start my journey. There was a small adjustment period, but I quickly learned my way around the city, got acquainted with my team at work, and started eating my way through Tokyo. 

Rakuten offers an ecosystem of products that help consumers in Japan (and expanding globally) in almost every key function in their life – finance, travel, e-commerce, entertainment, and even sports. For this internship, I have been able to help create a new product within Rakuten’s sports business department, called Rakuten Academy. The project aims to give kids access to top sports learning content and to mentors like Andres Iniesta, Yuto Horigome, and hopefully Steph Curry. Through a digital platform with videos and personalized coaching, kids can improve their gameplay and supplement their physical training. This project aligns with the sports business unit’s goal of democratizing sports by supporting amateur athletes. In my 9 weeks here, I am helping define the team’s long-term vision and am leading the product development of a key feature, one-on-one consultation, where a kid can submit videos of his training/game play and have a coach annotate and respond to the video with feedback and tips.  

The internship is about a 40-minute commute from Akabanebashi station to Futako-Tamagaway station, with one line transfer. Having lived 6 years in New York, I was a bit worried about the commute. However, I was pleasantly surprised to find that trains are impeccably clean, they come every 3 minutes without a hiccup, and people are always polite and silent. Every day I get to the office, queue in a very long, organized line for the elevators, and start my day. My work has been very interesting: learning about company culture, eating fermented soybeans at lunch (called natto), leading brainstorming sessions, and participating in team happy hours. My team, Rakuten Academy, is very global. We have two Japanese natives, two people from France, one from Poland, one Spaniard, and me, a Mexican American. Although my team is very global, the rest of the company is more Japanese than I anticipated. Not many people speak even conversational English, the company culture is very hierarchical, and there are some strict rules. For example, you must always place the company badge on the left side, and it is mandatory for every employee to read Hiroshi Mikitani’s (the CEO) book. 

Outside of work, I’ve been able to explore Japan a bit during a unique time when the borders are not yet open for tourism. I’ve done interesting things like going to an owl café, skydiving, fishing for my food at a restaurant, and I even attended a sumo tournament. In the next couple of weeks, I plan on climbing Mt. Fuji, scuba diving with manta rays, and stuffing my face with all the sushi I can before I head back to the real world. For anyone considering working/living abroad, I highly recommend trying it at least once.

About Marissa: Marissa Buffo (’23) is a first year at UCLA Anderson and, prior to Anderson, she worked in both consulting and international exchange. Originally from Chicago, she also lived /worked in Copenhagen prior to moving to Los Angeles, so she has a special appreciation for the warm, sunny days that persist year round. One of the main reasons I came to Anderson was the diverse array of options for experiential learning that are available from day one in the program. From global immersions to local internships, the program structure is built around facilitating opportunities for students to put theory into practice. I wanted to be in an environment where I was challenged both academically and in an applied context; and Anderson supported these goals through programming, global immersions, and internships – all of which I have been able to take advantage of in my first year of the MBA!

1. Investment and Consulting Teams (AVIP, ASAM, ASG)

It’s one thing to learn about the process for sourcing an investment, pitching a stock, or developing strategic recommendations for a client…it’s another to actually put yourself in the shoes of a VC, investment manager, or strategy consultant. Opportunities at Anderson through Anderson Venture Impact Partners (AVIP), Anderson Student Asset Management (ASAM), and Anderson Strategy Group (ASG) facilitate application of classroom learnings in a real-world investment or project. For all three opportunities, students must apply and then are divided into groups once accepted. As a first-year director within AVIP, I was fortunate to get exposure to the LA venture ecosystem and conduct first-hand sourcing and due diligence on healthcare startups to formulate a pitch to our investment committee. Companies that are selected for investment by the committee get incorporated into the AVIP portfolio and second years are engaged in monitoring investments – analyzing both financial and impact metrics.

2. Global Immersions

Anderson has a strong focus on global engagement and developing MBAs into internationally mindful business leaders. Even during the COVID pandemic, the Center for Global Management ran virtual programming that allowed for interaction with alumni and business leaders spread across the world. Post-COVID, Anderson has brought back the travel component of courses called ‘global immersions’ – students have several classroom sessions with a professor who is an expert in a specific region before traveling as a group to the city / region for company visits, cultural activities, and interactive lectures with local business leaders. I traveled to Santiago this March for the course “Doing Business in A Rapidly Changing Emerging Country: Chile and Its New Constitution” led by Prof. Sebastian Edwards, previous World Bank chief economist for the Latin America and Caribbean. Students heard from executives in significant sectors such as mining, fishing, wine, and banking and had discussions with notable economists and academics to gain a better understanding of the business environment in Chile and how this environment could potentially shift with a new constitution.

3. ‘Academic’ Internships

Los Angeles is the base for a wealth of startups, non-profits, and major corporations – this gives Anderson students plenty of opportunities to gain experience in their target industry. The Anderson careers portal posts a wide range of internships in entertainment, finance, marketing, VC, and more, but plenty of students have also found opportunities through networking at conferences, alumni outreach, or a peer student’s past / current professional connections. I’m currently working at a fast-growing startup co-founded by an Anderson alum in an industry that I find exceptionally fascinating / important – space! I’ve enjoyed connecting with the founders and leveraging the knowledge from the Anderson marketing core course to provide value to the team. ‘Academic’ internships only have the academic qualifier because they happen during the course of FTMBA academic programming, but often continue into the summer or post-MBA.

March 24th, 2021 – That’s when I received the phone call from UCLA Anderson Admission telling me the amazing news that I had been accepted at UCLA Anderson in the Full-time MBA program. My wife, who was also applying to business school with me, received the same good news just a few hours after. This was a turning point in my life, but I could not have anticipated the amount of work necessary to move my entire life from Canada to Los Angeles. In the months that followed, there was a lot of stuff to do in order to get ready for the move. Below I have divided my experiences in two parts: before moving to LA and after arriving in LA. I’ve tried to extract some lessons that my wife and I learned in both. 

 

Preparing to move to LA – Nowadays, a lot of the preparation for moving and living in a new city can be done before you actually arrive in that new city. Without a doubt, the most important part for an international student is the Visa application, which UCLA helps you obtain. Another key decision that we took was deciding to rent an apartment before arriving in LA. We were debating between renting a temporary place and visiting apartments in person for the first few weeks or simply doing virtual visits from Canada and signing the lease remotely. We decided to go for the latter as the virtual visits gave us a good view and understanding of the apartments. COVID further accelerated the willingness of real-estate agents to do virtual visits. My first takeaway from that experience was the importance of visiting the neighborhood virtually as well and understanding the surroundings as this can drastically impact your experience. While we also considered if we should ship our furniture to LA, we ultimately decided that the international shipping costs were too high and not worth it. The rest of the preparation was straightforward but I recommend waiting to get to LA to set up your finances and phone plan as it is much easier with a US address. 

 

Arriving in LA – My second lesson is to arrive in LA at least a few weeks before classes start. We arrived about 3 weeks before and took the first week and a half to set up our bank account, credit cards, phone plans and furniture for our entire apartment. Navigating the US with no credit, as you are an international student, is difficult. This means registering for a prepaid phone plan, buying your car in cash with no potential for financing, and trying (somehow) to get a credit card that does not require SSN. An additional trick for international students to get a credit card in the US is to use the Nova Credit website that allows you to use your credit file from your home country to apply for an AMEX credit card. Giving yourself time before the start of class also allows you to enjoy the onboarding week at Anderson. That first week is very busy and filled with activities that are much more enjoyable if you don’t have to build furniture when you come back home at night. 

 

Overall, my main takeaways from this experience are the following: 

• Enjoy and celebrate this amazing feeling of being accepted
• Make a list of things you have to do before leaving your home country and a list of things to do when you arrive in LA
• Try to have your housing figured out before arriving in LA (ideally)
• Make sure you enjoy the experience of moving to and discovering a new city

Visit UCLA Anderson! Sign up for a Campus Experience

Get to know us in person and experience everything UCLA Anderson has to offer!

When it comes to deciding if a school is the right fit for you, there is no substitute for first-hand experience. That is why we would like to encourage visit us in person (or virtually if you can’t travel). You can preview the UCLA Anderson MBA experience by participating in our MBA Campus Experience program during fall.  Our programming started earlier this week and will last until the end of November. The Campus Experience program will resume in mid-January when our students are back from their winter break.

When you sign up for a Campus Experience you have the option to select from all the activities available during the day of your visit. These may include General Information Session (GIS) presentations, school tours, class visits, and coffee chats. These events are great ways to learn more about the MBA program, our culture and individual experiences through the career recruiting process and club involvement.

• General Information Session (GIS) Presentation
  Learn about what sets us apart as a leading MBA program, pick up tips on how to successfully navigate the admissions process and get answers to your questions. Sessions are held generally on Mondays and Wednesdays at 5:00 PM and are hosted by a second-year student ambassador or an admissions officer.
• School Tour
  Stroll through our beautiful campus and surrounding grounds with a student ambassador tour guide to see how our students make the most of our world-class facilities. Tours are offered generally on Mondays and Wednesdays during the academic year at 4:00 PM.
  
  
• Class Visit
  Join our students in an actual full-time MBA class and experience the collaborative environment among our students and faculty. Classes are generally held Monday through Thursday during the academic year.
  
  
• Coffee Chats
  Learn first-hand from a current student all about our culture and opportunities at UCLA Anderson. Grab your favorite beverage and join the conversation. Student coffee chats are offered at varying times Monday through Thursday.
  
  
• Access Anderson (Oct. 19, 2019)
  While not part of our Campus Experience program directly, Access Anderson is our largest open-house preview event in the year where you can hear directly from our school leadership and engage in lively discussion with our community of students and alumni to learn all about our program in a single but very comprehensive event.

If you can’t join us in person at our campus, you can still connect with us online at an General Information Session Webinar hosted by a student ambassador or admissions officer on most Thursdays from 11:30 AM – 12:30 PM and/or watch one our featured students on a Liveguide webinar session. Past Liveguides are also available in our archives.

While participating in these events does not have a direct effect on the way applications are evaluated, we feel that applicants that have taken the time to learn more about our school are able to make a stronger case for why they want to be here (for example, in your essays) and tend to do better on their admissions interviews.

Hello Class of 2021 International Students and welcome to UCLA Anderson!

On behalf of the MBA Admissions office, I am happy to welcome all of you to International Welcome Week. We are all proud of what you have accomplished to date, joining the best graduate business school in the world. Personally, I have thoroughly enjoyed getting to know many of you at our recruiting sessions, the on-campus interview appointments, the admit events, and reading your applications. Your class is definitely a extraordinary collection of talented and diverse individuals.... but in the end, we are all one Anderson family.

Over the course of the next several days and weeks, you will be provided with countless advice on how to make the most of your two-year experience at UCLA Anderson. The UCLA Anderson experience is truly unique. You may find yourself in situations that will challenge you in a variety of different ways. Fortunately, you have enough classmates, faculty, staff, and alumni who are there to help. I encourage you to embrace these opportunities to challenge yourself and find out how much you can truly accomplish. Some ideas to consider include exploring the city of Los Angeles and later travel around the United States, if possible.

And at the same time, don’t forget that your relationship with the MBA Admissions team has not ended. We are always looking for the best talent to join future classes at UCLA Anderson. There are a number of ways to stay involved – you can join the Admissions Ambassador Corps (AAC), volunteer at a recruiting event, or simply refer a friend or colleague who you believe would be an outstanding addition to the UCLA Anderson community. TOP QUESTIONS FROM INTERNATIONAL APPLICANTS

 

As we get closer to our Round 2 deadline (January 8, 2019), we thought it would be helpful to share some of the common questions that we receive from international applicants. Below are the top 12 FAQs we receive from international candidates:

Q1. Is the application for international applicants the same as the application for domestic applicants?
A1. Yes, we use the same application for both international and domestic applicants.

Q2. If I have dual citizenship (i.e., Italy and U.S.), am I considered an international applicant or a U.S. applicant?
A2. We use the primary citizenship listed on your application --  if you list your U.S. citizenship as your primary citizenship, you are considered a U.S. applicant. However, if you list your U.S. citizenship as your secondary citizenship, you are considered an international applicant. 

Q3. What academic records do I need to submit with my application? What if they are not in English?
A3. In order to submit a completed application, you will need to upload a complete transcript and degree certificate or diploma in the native language of the country in which your degree was earned, as well as a certified translation in English. Please make sure that your degree certificate or diploma shows the exact degree received and date awarded. If invited to interview, you will be required to send us official hard-copy documents.

Q4. My undergraduate university does not use the 4.0 scale for my grades. Do I need to convert my grades?
A4. No, please do not convert your grades to a 4.0 scale. We will evaluate your transcripts using the grading scale used by your institution. It is helpful if the grading scale is visible on your transcripts or degree certificate/diploma.

Q5. If I earned a three-year undergraduate degree, am I still eligible to apply?
A5. Yes, you are still welcome to apply. We do admit students with 3-year degrees, but the rest of your application needs to be exceptionally strong to compete against other applicants with 4-year degrees. If you would like your academic records to equate to a 4-year degree, you would need to either complete a master's degree or other post-graduate degree/diploma.

Q6. Is the TOEFL or IELTS required for all international applicants?
A6. TOEFL or IELTS scores are required of all international applicants EXCEPT those from a select list of countries. For more information please refer to UCLA Graduate Division Office English Requirements.

Q7. Is the TOEFL preferred over the IELTS?
A7. No, both exams are accepted equally. It is up to you to decide which test you prefer. 

Q8. If I completed my bachelors or masters degree in the United States, do I need to submit a TOEFL or IELTS score?
A8. No, if you have a bachelors or masters degree from a university in the United States, you do not need to submit a TOEFL or IELTS score. The same applies if your bachelors or masters degree is from a university located in another country in which English is both the primary spoken language of daily life and the medium of instruction (e.g., Australia, Barbados, Canada, Ireland, Jamaica, New Zealand, United Kingdom).

Q9. How does the interview process work?
A9. Interviews are conducted on an invitation basis only after submitted applications are reviewed. Interviews last approximately 30 minutes and are intended to be an interactive conversation. We are interested in getting to know you as an individual and understanding how you'll fit into the next class. A large portion of our interviews are conducted by student ambassadors.

Q10. If invited to interview, do I have to interview on the UCLA Anderson campus?
A10. No. We offer two interview options: on-campus or online via Skype. If invited to interview, you will be able to choose which option is best for you. If you would like to visit campus to interview in person, you are welcome to, but we do not expect all applicants to do so. There is no difference or preference between interviews.

Q11. If I am visiting campus and have not received an interview invitation, can I request one?
A11. While we encourage applicants to visit a class or attend on-campus events, it is not possible to request a formal application interview if you have not received an invitation. Q12. If I need more time to submit my application, can I apply in Round 3 as an international student?
A12. Yes. While Round 3 is generally more competitive because fewer seats are usually available in the class, it is still a very viable round.
