Student Perspectives: A Day in the Life of DaJuan Bennett '20 (Throwback Thursday)

As a prospective student, you’re probably wondering what your days would like should you enroll at UCLA Anderson. Knowing the range of activities my classmates and I are engaged in - including academics, clubs, recruiting, and social events - it can be difficult to describe what a typical day as an MBA here looks like … it truly does differ for every student! That said, I wanted to offer a taste of what a day for me actually entails to help you start to see yourself here.

For Throwback Thursday #tbt, here’s a look at a day during Fall Quarter of my first year.

7:45am: I’m still excited from a long weekend of celebration. We won 2^nd place at the UT Austin Real Estate Case Competition in Austin and I volunteered at Embracing Diversity this weekend. I usually wake up around this this time, I live in Hollywood, so it takes me a little longer to commute to school. On Mondays and Wednesdays, I don’t have class until 12:45 and Tuesdays and Thursdays, I have class at 9:45. I spend most of the morning catching up on emails and prepping for the day, could be an interview, informational, or company presentation, I need to get ready for. Today, I have an interview and class, so I’m prepping for that.

 

10:30am: After a 35-45 minute commute from Hollywood, I get to campus around this time and catch up with friends in the courtyard. There are always students doing homework, preparing for class, or having coffee/breakfast in the courtyard. As the Director of Community for the Black Business Student Association,  I need to spend some time researching yacht prices for our Spring Social. I am also the Director of Communications for the Anderson Real Estate Association, so I need to get updates from our members and send out the weekly newsletter. Usually I’ll just have a protein bar and a coffee before class.

12:45pm: I am an Admissions Ambassador, so if there are students visiting class, I will pick them up from Admissions and walk them over to class. Time for Finance with Professor Carlin. One of my favorite professors so far, he makes class very interesting an entertaining.

2:15pm: Class is over, now I need to head downtown for my interview at a Real Estate Private Equity firm. Wish me luck!

6:00pm: My interview went great, in fact, one of my interviewers was an Anderson alum! I should hear back in a couple of weeks. Now it’s time to meet up with my Consortium family for Friendsgiving. Can’t wait to have a good meal.

 

Every day is different at Anderson. From class, club meetings, and chilling on the beach, each day brings a special treat. One of the greatest things about Anderson is the community. No matter what is going on that day, I know that I can depend on one of my classmates, faculty, and or staff to help me overcome any challenges. Every day I am glad I chose Anderson because I feel like I can be my true self here, which attributes to my success thus far. Thanks for reading!

When I decided I wanted to pursue a career in entertainment, UCLA Anderson was the obvious choice for business school. In the same zip code as many of the major studios, and with an impressive alumni roster including Youtube CEO Susan Wojcicki and AEG CEO Dan Beckerman (among a slew of others), it just made logical sense. What I didn’t realize, however, was how great an undertaking an industry pivot would be, especially into the world of entertainment where full-time job opportunities are limited, recruiting is just-in-time, and sometimes it really is more about who you know than what you know.

Before Anderson, I was a management consultant in Kansas City, Missouri. I usually get a strange reaction from my peers when I say that, not only because they didn’t realize Kansas City was in Missouri, but because many of them came to business school to pivot into consulting, and here I am looking for what will surely be a pay cut in entertainment. Truth be told, I’m sponsored by my former employer, which essentially means I have a position waiting for me at the end of these two years, but no contractual or financial obligation to take it. In other words, this is the least risky time for me to explore my passion for entertainment despite my lack of industry knowledge and experience. Fortunately, I’m not alone, and Anderson recognizes that. I am consistently impressed by the availability of resources that Anderson and the Parker Career Center provide to alleviate the difficulty of an industry pivot and ensure I’m ready for the recruiting process. Below are just a few that have been especially helpful.

• Anderson Career Teams (ACT): Constructed of 10-12 peers also pursuing a career in entertainment, ACT teams are taught by enthusiastic second-year “coaches” and designed to prepare us for the recruiting process by generating relevant and meaningful industry-specific dialogue. One week we talked about the strategy and tradeoffs of the Disney/Fox merger, the next we did a full SWOT analysis of Netflix and its competitors in the subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) ecosystem. You may be wondering: “But what did you actually do with that information, Andrew?” Great question! A few months ago, I didn’t even know what SVOD meant; now, with a more holistic understanding of the entertainment landscape, I can confidently engage with industry professionals, and I was even able to land an academic internship at NBCUniversal next spring!
  
  
• Interview Prep Teams (IPT): “How do I answer a behavioral interview question? What the heck is a case interview? And more importantly, what does that look like in an entertainment interview?” Unless you’ve been through it before, it’s hard to answer any of these questions. Fortunately, IPT at Anderson is the interview prep I never knew I needed. These weekly one-on-one sessions with a second-year student in the Entertainment Management Association have been wildly beneficial in helping me structure my thoughts under pressure. From seemingly simple prompts like “Tell me about yourself” to trickier case questions like “Will Disney+ be successful?”, IPT has provided me practical frameworks, hours of practice, and candid feedback that will be invaluable as I approach interview season.
  
  
• Professional Clubs and Organizations: In such a dynamic and interconnected industry riddled with mergers, acquisitions, carve-outs, and other structural intricacies, the Entertainment Management Association (EMA) at Anderson ensures we know how to talk the talk. The first few months of the fall quarter were packed with alumni visits providing state-of-the-industry updates on the various entertainment verticals (e.g., TV, film, gaming, music). For someone like me who had never needed to be informed of and have an opinion about entertainment industry trends, these events were incredibly valuable in getting me up-to-speed with many of my peers who came to Anderson with a solid knowledge base or had worked in the industry previously.
  
  
• Industry-specific Career Advisor: Having a Parker Career Advisor dedicated to the entertainment industry has been vital in my pursuit of internship opportunities. Especially in entertainment, companies are excited to learn that you’ve invested time in talking with current employees and learning more about the culture, and my advisor has connected me with alumni nationwide to ensure I’m doing just that. Company visit at 7pm? They’re there. Quick meeting at 8am before your interview this afternoon? Sure, why not! In just the first four months, my advisor has gone above and beyond to build my alumni network, inform me of internship opportunities, and advocate on my behalf.

Not interested in entertainment? No problem. These resources are available to students across all industries and business functions. Regardless of your subject matter expertise when you start the MBA program, whether you’re pursuing a minor functional shift or a dramatic pivot into an industry you know nothing about (*raises hand*), Anderson has the resources to get you there. It won’t be easy, but it’ll be worth it.

UCLA Anderson Application Insider: Interview Tips

INTERVIEW TIPS

Interviews are a crucial part of the application process. While interviews serve as an opportunity to meet you in person, learn more about your goals, and potentially, clear up any questions that we may have about your application, they are one of the best ways for you to demonstrate that you have a clear vision for your MBA and how you will enhance our community.

The first step to ensuring that you are prepared for your MBA interview is to understand the interview process. For UCLA Anderson specifically, our interviews are invitation-only interviews, which means that we first evaluate your application before deciding whether or not to extend an interview invitation. Staying true to our collaborative spirit, the majority of our interviews are conducted by second year student ambassadors. Our student ambassadors are our partners in the admissions process and we value the insight they provide in helping to select the next class of Anderson students.

Here are a few tips to make sure that you make a positive impression during your interview:

1. Be professional. Treat the interview as you would an employment interview. Be on time, dress professionally, and make sure that your resume is up-to-date. Remember to treat everyone that you meet with respect.
2. Be confident. Don’t forget that you can exhibit confidence through your body language. Sit tall with your shoulders back and remember to maintain good eye contact with your interviewer.
3. Engage. Remember that the interview is not one-sided, it is meant to be a conversation. Be prepared to share about yourself, engage in the conversation, and ask thoughtful questions. The interview is also an opportunity to learn from your interviewer.
4. Be clear. Be prepared to speak to why you are pursuing an MBA, your goals, and why UCLA Anderson is a good choice for you. Understand how your experience to date can help support your goals and how an Anderson MBA can help you fill any gaps or help you develop further. You should also be prepared to speak to how you can contribute to our community.
5. Be genuine. Be yourself and enjoy the conversation. The interview is an opportunity for you to showcase your personality, enhance your candidacy, and learn more about UCLA Anderson.

Student Perspectives: Moving from the East Coast

I grew up in Richmond, Virginia, went to undergrad at UNC Chapel Hill and immediately moved to New York City upon graduation. Living on the east coast was all that I knew for 27 years of my life. What I didn’t know was that moving to Los Angeles to attend the UCLA Anderson School of Management would be one of the best decisions I made in life.

All of my immediate family is still on the East Coast – either in Virginia or Philadelphia, but the truth is I’m only a phone call and plane ride away. I could count on my two hands the number of people I knew in LA prior to starting business school and many of those people were merely acquaintances. The moment I had to fill out two local emergency contacts for school was when it really hit me that I was moving into new territory. Despite not knowing many people in LA before Anderson, the transition to LA was quite easy and immediate. It started in the spring when I attended the admitted students weekend (A-Days) – it wasn’t until that weekend that I fully committed to Anderson. It made the transition in August easier to know a few familiar faces. And, my classmates – the #Anderfam quickly became my west coast family – and I haven’t looked back.

Having lived for four years in New York City, I did not previously have a car. When I made the move to LA, I decided to lease a car out here, which was a great decision. Many of my classmates do not have a car and it is not necessary, but for me it is a convenience to be able to drive to school, the grocery store, hikes and the beach. It certainly is a change not being able to walk everywhere like I did in New York City, but the west coast comes with many benefits.

In my almost six months at Anderson so far, there have been a total of five days where the sun did not come out. Everyone in LA talks about the weather – almost to an annoying extent – but it is hard to not be happy when the sun is always shinning! I can be outside or go for a run outside every day of the year, which is not possible in most places on the east coast. Going to business school in a city such as Los Angeles has ample benefits as well. Anderson has the community of a school in a small town, but is based in a big city. There is a lot of opportunity for academic internships, guest speakers from the area and being able to meet with alumni in person. As a city, Los Angeles has a lot to offer and there is something for everyone – hikes (I’m a big fan of LA hiking!), surfing and the beach, a lively restaurant and bar scene, a good sports town, an arts scene and of course, the entertainment scene.

I’m not sure if I will stay on the west coast long term or not – for me, it really depends on the job. Regardless, there is a huge advantage to going to graduate school somewhere new – on a different coast – and a huge opportunity to have connections all over the country and world. Moving across the country for Anderson was an awesome decision and I would do it hundred times again. I truly love my Anderson experience.

Student Perspectives: A Day in the Life of Jessica Cheng '20

Hi Everyone!

My name is Jessica and I’m a first-year MBA student at UCLA Anderson. I’ve been loving my Anderson experience so I wanted to share with all of you what a typical day might look like. While every day is different, the energy and excitement around campus has been consistent throughout my experience.

To give you a bit of a background, I came to Anderson to try to start my own company in the fitness-tech space. (Shameless plug: Anderson is amazing for entrepreneurship!) Previously, I studied hospitality management at Cornell University and pursued a career at Royal Caribbean Cruises doing revenue management and corporate planning. I plan to bring my service mindset into the creation of an amazing tech product.

8:00 am: Wake up, think about going on a run, and changed my mind. I try meditating instead which is supposed to be great for mental health. After a healthy breakfast, I go through my inbox and review my schedule for the day. 

9:45 am: Econ class time! In your first year, you are split into sections of ~70 students each. We take all our core classes as one section, so these are some of my closest friends. I love seeing my section-mates.

11:30 am: I attend AnderTech’s “Tech Bytes” series, where my friend Jon (a computer science major and brilliant teacher) gives a lecture on tech stacks using Tinder as an example. The room is packed as we all crowd in to learn from my fellow classmate. Many people in the room are recruiting for product management positions at tech firms, so they are asking great questions. After the meeting, I speak with one of student hosts Kartik who points me to fantastic resources that will help me with my startup idea. I grab a slice of free pizza from this event and head to my next class.

12:45 pm: Stats Class! Again I’m excited to see my section-mates. I catch up with John and Ryan on our Winter Breaks. Today we begin discussions on linear data regressions. Although I’ve studied this before, learning it with Professor Siddiq has been especially interesting since he constantly incorporates real life scenarios where this would be useful.

2:15 pm: I get a breather. I sit outside in the courtyard and take a moment to appreciate the beautiful fall California weather. Two of my classmates join me and we catch up on life and reminisce the “Friendsgiving” event from last quarter. (It was pot-luck style and Julia's pie was phenomenal). We talk about their experiences recruiting for consulting and I help them practice behavioral interview questions. These are tricky but Parker has armed us with great advice.

3:30 pm: My friends, Rachel and Chloe, have been champions of student-led initiatives for sustainability at Anderson. This is something I care deeply about thus the three of us meet to discuss what the next projects will be. I’m excited about the impact we’ll make together, and I’m glad the administration has been so supportive of us efforts.

4:00 pm: My Entrepreneurship ACT group meets each Tuesday. There are about 15 of us in this group and I love how driven, visionary, and helpful my peers are. In previous sessions, I’ve been able to bounce my idea off so many people and had received excellent feedback. Today, our 2nd year ACT coach, Arjun, discusses financials and how the models will look different depending on our business idea. I’ll be incorporating all my ACT-group learning into my preliminary pitch deck which I’ll present next week!

5:00 pm: I run to my meeting with the other Section Presidents and our school Deans. (Three of them are here today!) As the elected president of my section, I'm honored with the duty of advocating for my section-mates, and this weekly meeting has been the perfect forum for me to voice student concerns and spark open dialogue. Working among this group has been one of my favorite parts of my Anderson experience, as I feel like I’m making a difference in this community. I have to say – there’s an unbelievable level of trust among this group and I leave feeling grateful for the administrative team we have at Anderson.

6:15 pm: I hit the library to wait for dinner and pick up my classmate/friend Ezra who will be carpooling with me. The library at night isn’t as bustling but there’s a nice vibe to it. I catch up on more emails and update my calendar.

7:30 pm: Learning team dinner at Gyu-Kaku! My learning team comprises of 5 others who have such different backgrounds from me. Among us, we have consultants, talent managers, a sports guru, and a government expert. We are from both coasts, the Midwest, Montecarlo/Italy/France, and Japan. We bond over completing our group assignments together, and as a result, they’ve become some of my closest friends at Anderson. During dinner we talked about the Global Immersion programs versus the student-led spring break treks, and I decide to do JapAnderson and book my plane tickets so I can sit with my team. At the end of the night, we celebrate Hiro’s birthday over some tasty s’mores.

10:00pm: How did I get home so late? I catch up on emails and do some readings for class. I’m thinking more about my startup idea and decide to shoot out a few emails to 2^nd years. One in particular runs his company out of the Anderson Accelerator so I reach out to learn more about his experience.

1:00am: Sleep time. I make a promise to myself that I'll get up and run tomorrow. Will I though? We'll see.

Student Perspectives: A Day in the Life of Ryan Cameron '20

Welcome to a day in the life of a UCLA Anderson full-time MBA student! It feels like yesterday that I was sitting in your shoes researching the various MBA programs. I know how important it is to find a program that fits your personality and working style, while providing you with a platform to grow your career. I hope that this insider’s perspective of a typical day in my life at UCLA Anderson will give you an opportunity to learn more. While there is no typical day in fall quarter as a first year recruiting for consulting, I hope you enjoy learning about a day in the life at UCLA Anderson!

6:00am: I wake up early during the week (don’t worry, I get plenty of sleep on the weekends) to start my day with a light workout and breakfast. UCLA has a brand new grad student-only gym located close to my apartment, and I love taking advantage of these facilities. One thing I have learned is how important it is to take care of yourself during the busy fall quarter. Recruiting, club activities, class, and social events all compete for the limited time in the day, so it is important to take care of yourself during the busy fall quarter!

9:00am: I arrive on campus to meet with the members of my consulting IPT (Interview Prep Team) to practice our case interviewing skills. IPT has been a valuable resource for me as I prepare for consulting internship interviews in January. Each IPT team's structure varies depending on your career target, but IPT for me is a team of four first years recruiting for consulting that get together four times per week to practice case and behavioral interview questions. I am lucky to have four great team members who are all committed to each other’s success, and we push each other to improve daily.

2:00pm: At this point, class is done for the day, but the fun is just getting started! A group of my friends from the John Anderson Golf Club decide to hit the links down in Palos Verdes at a course with an ocean view to blow off some steam. Southern California has endless options for just about any outdoor sport, and the best part is you can partake year round with the great weather here! I am a Southern California native, so I may be a little biased, but I couldn’t imagine living anywhere else for my two years of business school.

7:30pm: I hurry home to meet with one of my teams to work on a group case. It’s been an amazing experience working with such smart, ambitious people with a diverse set of backgrounds. One of my favorite parts about UCLA Anderson has been the collaborative environment we encourage here. As business continues to become more globally focused, it will be important for future business leaders of all types to work together effectively and efficiently. Plus, it’s been amazing to learn about other’s experiences to broaden my horizons and help me become a more well-rounded person!

As you can see, UCLA Anderson is a diverse, collaborative, and social environment where every member of our community encourages each other to grow both professionally and personally. While each Anderson student’s personal experiences will certainly differ from mine, I am confident that one common theme holds true: we wouldn’t trade our experience at Anderson for anything. UCLA Anderson Application Insider: Waitlist Guidlelines

APPLICATION INSIDER TOPIC:

WAITLIST GUIDELINES

Getting onto UCLA Anderson’s waitlist is an exceptional accomplishment; waitlisted candidates are recognized as potentially being a strong fit, but we cannot offer everyone a seat at this time due to size limitations. Nevertheless, we encourage you to read the following guidelines to learn more about the waitlist and ways to potentially enhance your candidacy.

• You will remain on the waitlist until a final decision is made on your application or until you request that your application be withdrawn. 

• Waitlisted candidates (except those who withdraw) will be reconsidered for admission in subsequent rounds.

• Round 1 applicants will receive an update on their application status on or before the Round 2 decision deadline which is March 26, 2019. Some candidates may be offered the option of remaining on the waitlist for consideration in Round 3.

• Remaining waitlisted candidates from Round 1 and Round 2 will receive an update on their application status by the Round 3 decision deadline which is May 21, 2019. 

• We cannot give individual feedback to waitlisted applicants.

• The likelihood of being admitted off the waitlist is difficult to predict since the number of students admitted from the waitlist varies from year to year depending on the size/strength of the admit pool, the number of admits who enroll, and several other factors.

• OPTIONAL: Waitlisted candidates may send updates to [email protected].
  • We ask that you use your personal judgment and discretion in submitting additional information that is relevant to your application. Examples include (but are not limited to): promotions at work, updated test scores, and recent extracurricular accomplishments.

Visit UCLA Anderson! Sign up for a Campus Experience

After a few weeks off for relaxation and travel, our students returned this week for the Winter Quarter. Our Admissions Ambassador Corps (AAC) is back to work with our Campus Experience offerings, including General Information Sessions (GIS), school tours, class visits, webinars, coffee chats and lunches. These events are all great opportunities to learn more about the MBA program, our culture, and individual experiences at UCLA Anderson.

General Information Session (GIS)
Learn about what distinguishes our leading MBA program and how to successfully navigate the admissions process. This quarter, sessions are generally held on Mondays and Tuesdays (at 5:00 PM) and are hosted by a second-year student ambassador or an admissions officer.

School Tour
Stroll through our beautiful campus and surrounding grounds with a student ambassador to see how our students make the most of our world class facilities. This quarter, tours are generally offered on Mondays and Tuesdays (at 4:00 PM) during the academic year.

Class Visit
Join an actual full-time MBA class and experience the collaborative environment among our students and faculty. Classes are generally held Monday through Thursday during the academic year (beginning the 2^nd week of the quarter).

Webinars
Join our student ambassadors and admissions officers as we discuss the UCLA Anderson MBA experience, the admissions process and answer your questions. These interactive sessions are offered on most Thursdays from 11:30 AM – 12:30 PM.

Coffee Chat or Lunch

UCLA Anderson Application Insider: Round 2 Deadline Tomorrow!

APPLICATION INSIDER TOPIC:

ROUND 2 DEADLINE

 

It's hard to believe that 2019 is already here and that our Round 2 deadline is only a day away -- January 8, 2019 at 11:59 PM (Los Angeles time)! For us on the Admissions Committee, we're gearing up for the busiest time of the admissions cycle, as this is typically the round in which we receive the greatest number of applications.  We will definitely keep everyone in the loop with any admissions updates on this blog, so keep checking in!

Not sure if you should apply in Round 2 or wait? For those who are not ready to submit by the Round 2 deadline, our Round 3 deadline is April 16, 2019 so you have a few more months to work on your application. Here's some more information about the pros and cons of applying in each round. 

If you are able to visit us on campus, we highly encourage joining us for a Campus Experience program that includes class visits, campus tours, and more.  Our programming for Winter quarter will begin on Tuesday, January 8th and registration is now open -- click here to learn more and RSVP (spots are limited!).  Additional campus experience spots will be added over the next few weeks so keep checking back.
