JOANNA COHEN
UCLA Anderson Class of 2019
Name: UCLA Anderson MBA Class: Hometown: Undergraduate Studies: Pre-MBA Career: Post-MBA Goals: |
Q. Introduce yourself to your classmates!
A Hi! I'm Joanna and have worked my entire career in Retail/CPG. I've worked in allocations, buying and planning and am pursing and MBA to move into and internal strategic role withing the same industries! I love art, photography, and improv comedy!
Q. Why did you decide to attend UCLA Anderson? #whyAnderson?
A. I chose Anderson because I knew I wanted to live in California long term. UCLA's curriculum could expand on my retail/supply chain knowledge and give me the foundations to transition into consulting. By attending UCLA, I can also take advantage of all the local companies and gain exposure into how different businesses operate.I felt that the way Anderson's program was structured would give me an opportunity to hone in on my specific career goals and support me in getting there.
Q. When did you know UCLA Anderson was the right school for you?
A. After the final night of A-Days, I felt something I hadn't felt from other schools. Everyone I met was warm and genuinely excited about their careers and starting school. I didn't feel a sense of competition or judgment about previous work or schools!
Q. What are you most excited about at UCLA Anderson?
A. I'm excited to go on the Days-on-the-Job (DOJ) career treks and see how other companies run their businesses. I cannot wait to travel, as well!
Q. Why did you decide to pursue an MBA degree?
A. I love working in retail/CPG but I knew I wanted to operate at a higher function and move into internal strategy. I love problem solving and improving efficiency and I felt that and MBA would help me get a role in consulting which could ultimately lead to my dream job. Also, I felt that my undergraduate majors left me with gaps in fundamental business concepts.
Q. What is one thing you hope to accomplish by the end of your 1st year at Anderson?
A. I would love to have secured myself a consulting internship and a leadership in the retail club!
Q. What is a piece of advice you have for prospective business school applicants?
A. Don't let your background stop you from applying! I come from a very non-traditional background (art major!) and in the industries I've worked in an MBA is rare. I now see my employment and education history as an asset rather than a limitation!
Q. What are some UCLA Anderson clubs you're interested in joining?
A. Management Consulting Association, Retail Business Association, and the Black & Scholes Surf Club.
Q. What is a fun fact about yourself?
A. I do improv comedy at the UCB theater in Hollywood for fun and just had a show this past July!
