I can imagine how overwhelming it must feel as an applicant doing your due diligence on MBA programs - every school is different in terms of deadlines, required documents, interviews, when to contact us, when NOT to contact us, etc. So for today's post, I'd like to provide an overview of our full-time MBA application materials for first-time applicants, something that can be a quick and easy reference for you without burdening you with information overload. You can find additional details on the application requirements section of our website if you'd like a more comprehensive explanation of everything.
Online application & fee - pretty self-explanatory. Each year, our team completes a thorough review of the online application to identify and remove unnecessary questions and streamline the overall process. Filling out an application (or multiple ones) can be long and cumbersome, but know that the information we do ask for is important!
GMAT - you can take the GMAT up to the round deadline for which you plan to apply. So for example, if you plan to apply in Round 1, you can take the GMAT on or before October 26th and still make it into this round. Also, if you take the GMAT multiple times, we will primarily consider your highest score for admissions purposes. However, note that we can still see all of your previous scores and the number of times you took the test. The earliest allowable GMAT test date is April 1, 2007.
TOEFL - this is a requirement for applicants educated in a country where english is not the ubiquitous language. You can take the TOEFL up to the round deadline you plan to apply for, similar to the GMAT. The earliest allowable TOEFL test date is April 1, 2010. And in case you're curious, we do accept the IELTS as well.
Transcripts - to make life easier you (and us!), we ask that you do NOT send us hard copies of official transcripts at this point. Instead, just scan and upload your transcript(s) to the online application. Quick and easy!
Resume - a business format is preferred to a CV format, and please try to be concise and succinct by limiting your resume to a maximum of two pages. To tweak an old saying - "brevity is the soul of an impactful resume."
Letters of recommendation - TWO are required, no more, no less. We prefer require recommendations submitted online, since this ensures the speediest and most reliable delivery, not to mention peace of mind for you knowing they can never get lost or misplaced. However, we do accept hard copy recommendations delivered through regular mail, so don't fret if your recommender refuses to submit his/her remarks online. Update: as of September 29th, we only accept online recommendations.
Essays - Two are required, one is optional, and all must be submitted in written format uploaded to the online application. A big hint on how to make the admissions committee happy - follow instructions. Please try to stick to the word counts listed and answer the questions being asked. Essay prompts are as follows:
1. What events or people have had the greatest influence in shaping your character and why? (750 words)
2. Describe your short-term and long-term career goals. What is your motivation for pursuing an MBA now and how will UCLA Anderson help you to achieve your goals? (750 words)
Are there any extenuating circumstances in your profile about which the Admissions Committee should be aware? (250 words)
